TWO DAYS WITH TWO ENGLISH ARTISTS : SHONA AND PETER.

Click on the bridge to see the slideshow.

During these two days we made a very complex work. It was about drawing a monument by using tracing paper, transferring it on a sheet and then cutting it with a knife. Said like that it sounds easy but on the contrary it was necessary to be very patient and we could not shake because if we didn’t cut well it was a problem because on the computer we can see very well all the imperfections. We were assisted by the two artists: they were of a big help but the inconvenience was that I didn’t understand everything they said but fortunately there were translators (pupils). There was also Mrs Létant and Mrs Daugé. When everything was cut and scanned, it was necessary to choose the colour of the background by trying different colours. It was difficult to agree. Then, we had to write a card for our English correspondents. At the end we took a photo of the group with our cards. It was too cool!
Bilal

Two days with great artists.
During these two days we did have a lot of fun. First, Monday morning we made a test: we had to take a photocopy of the first letter of our first name, and then we traced it and transferred it on a coloured paper. We cut it with a knife. Monday afternoon we started the real project. We had to choose the picture we wanted and trace it and transfer it again. I chose a gargoyle with Leonard. When we finished cutting it Peter scanned it on his computer and he chose the place he wanted it to be. Tuesday morning we continued the project and we chose the colours of the background of our masterpiece. In the afternoon, we wrote a card for you.
Nathan

Monday March 9th was a great day spent with two English artists, Peter and Shona, and our English and art teachers. At the beginning, we arrived in the classroom we watched a slideshow and we traced the two first letters of our initials. It was funny. We listened to Shona and Peter who gave us instructions which consisted in tracing the work on a coloured paper and cutting with a paper knife. I had a great time on that day.
On Tuesday, we continued Monday’s work, enjoying ourselves, talking, listening to the instructions. The artists were humorous and very enthralling. During the work Shona and Peter asked us about colours and the laying out of drawings and at the end of the day, we were all amazed by the result obtained in only two days. Everybody was happy, excited, glad about this work and above all proud of it.
Mamadou.

Last week we had a visit of two English artists in our school. The man’s name is Peter and the woman’s name is Shona. We were in the art classroom and we were excited by the project. We watched a slide show about the Thames festival in London. We saw a lot of people coming from different countries who wore their traditional clothes. Some of them were dancing, playing music and others were cooking.
Then, we listened to Peter’s instructions about safety rules. He explained how to use the knife on a rubber cutting mat. Then we traced from letters and we reported them a coloured paper. We traced with pencils, we cut our initials and Peter scanned our letters. In the afternoon we did the same work with photos. Some of them were about monuments of Paris and the others were about lampposts, gates, bridges of course! We cut them and after we put them together to have different patterns. After when we got enough drawings we laid them out on the computer and we chose the colours with Photoshop. I liked this project because it was an experience for me and the class. We were very proud of ourselves and managed to do an art piece and spent a good time.
Nicolas.

During two days, Peter and Shona came to help us make the project. The first day they showed us the photos of the festival. I understood that it was a big international festival. Then, we began to train with our letters. In the afternoon, we began to work on the project. We cut the drawings. The second day we continued. In the afternoon we ended with drawings again. Peter chose the colours and during this time we wrote a letter. I was proud of what I made.
Wanis.

During the two days with Pete and Shona, we did an art project. It was interesting. First, we watched a slide show on Pete’s computer. Then we trained with the initials of our names. We had to trace and cut. At the beginning it was not easy. Pete and Shona helped us to handle the knife. Our main task was to cut out the shapes of the letters with the small details and patterns, like lace. It required a lot of patience and precision. Once we were more at ease, we started the real creation. We chose a picture that represented an element of Paris, and then we traced forms. I really enjoyed it and the result was beautiful. Pete scanned the first drawings. He put the pieces together with photoshop, chose a colour with us. It was very very meticulous and enthralling! Everyone had a precise task to do. We were very organised. We sometimes had a break because the work was hard. Nevertheless, it was two interesting days.
Rosanna.

Monday, March 9th. We all worked on the project “Rivers of the world”. We started the day by watching a slide show of last year’s festival. Then, the artists showed us an example of the work we had to do. We had to work with the first letter of our first name. Then we had to transfer it on a coloured paper and cut it out with a paper knife. After lunch we began the second work which consisted in choosing more complicated photographs of Paris, of buildings in black and white and in doing the same work we did with the letters. It took more time but it was very interesting to make and the artists gave good advice. At the end of the day we did well. During the second day, we continued our preceding work but this time Peter started putting our work together thanks to his computer. We had also to decide about the colours, the place of the elements and it was difficult to decide. But we finally found a good harmony and while the artists were laying out all the elements of our board we wrote a letter to our pen friends. At the end of this day, the board was finally finished, the artists and our teachers congratulated us and we were really very satisfied. I really liked these two days creating and assembling things was very interesting and I learned many things.
Noémie.

I really loved these two days of work for the project “River of the World”. Peter and Shona two British artists came to help us. They were very nice with us. We watched a slide show of the Thames festival. It was interesting. There were a lot of people from different origins. Before we started working Peter told us about safety rules: the instructions were clear. Peter and Shona gave us a paper knife, a tracing paper and a rubber cutting mat. We chose a photocopy; we drew the pattern of the photocopy on a tracing paper. We chose a coloured paper and we cut the pattern with a paper knife. It was difficult to be precise. The shapes were sometimes complicated. We worked hard. I was amazed and proud of my work. Our work was scanned. We took a picture of the group. I had a great time.
Gracieuse.

The project was a good job because the class was united to make a smashing piece of art! Shona and Peter were humorous with us and so proud when we gave back our first cuttings. The class was very cool for once. I was very surprised by their patience. On the first day, we had photocopies of our initials. Then we cut our initials. That was a good practice for us…and I liked it. After we took a photocopy of a picture and we drew it thanks to tracing paper. We cut following the contours. We also watched a slide show of the festival. That day was cool because the class had a great time. On the second day, we thought of the final project. And I think Peter and Shona were very concentrated because they had pressure. The work was great because if a pupil failed his/her work, he/she could begin more carefully. At the end, I was very proud of myself and my class. And I think Peter and Shona were proud too. I’m excited because I want to see the board in London.
Ferdinand.

During these two days I learnt a lot of English and art thanks to Shona and Peter. I worked hard too. We created a piece of art. We had to be attentive, clean and observant. Shona and Peter gave us the pattern that we had to trace. We cut it and scanned it then they used a software called photoshop to put together all the pieces of our work. Peter had to change the colour. He suggested the colour and we agreed.
Julien.

I was excited to work with 2 artists on Monday. We started our work on the project at 9 a.m. When I entered into the classroom, I saw my English and art teachers with them. All the students introduced themselves and they also did to us but Peter didn’t tell us his age. At the beginning of the work they showed us a slide show of the Thames festival and that was great. So our teacher told us we had to work hard. We took some photocopies of funny alphabet letters. All the students chose the first alphabet letter of their own name. I found it easy and I enjoyed drawing on tracing paper. Then we had to turn it back and draw it again on purple paper for example. Then I cut it slowly on a rubber cutting mat with a knife. But before cutting Shona explained safety rules to me because it was dangerous to cut with a knife and it was Peter who explained the safety rules to the other kids. I was the first who finished the paper cutting so Peter put it on the computer. Then some people started to clap because it was like the first step of our work. I was so proud and happy because my work was the first to be scanned for the project and that wasn’t so hard so I thought my classmates could do it easily and very well. When all the kids finished making the paper cutting, some of the works were scanned and put into the computer and then Peter changed the colours of the papers. He used a software called photoshop. That time I was so surprised and in my mind I thought “technology is really cool!” I don’t know a lot on that. Then we took another step on. Pictures which were more difficult than the first ones were given to us. Those were some scenes of Paris. When we started working on them our teachers and artists helped us. After all that work wasn’t as difficult as I thought. It was a great job. All the students made a lot of cutting and at last on the computer it looked great, amazing, fantastic and super. Then we had some difficulties in choosing the colours. I think everyone worked very hard and they were so happy and glad of our work. Then we wrote letters to our pen pals because the artists were to work with them on the next Monday. I really liked those two days because we made a beautiful board and there wasn’t any lesson to learn. We just drew and cut and we could also talk with our friends. The artists and our teachers were very good with us.
Choedon.

On the first day we met two English artists: Peter and Shona. They showed us different projects made the year before and after that they explained us the technique. First we chose a photo, drew it thanks to tracing paper. We turned it on a coloured paper and rehearsed the lines and finally cut the paper with a knife. To train we had to take our initials and we had to use the same technique until the end of the morning. After lunch we started with the real elements of our board. I chose a Parisian bench: the perspective was very difficult. The second day we chose our second and last image. I chose Notre de Dame de Paris and we had to proceed the same way. At the end of the afternoon we wrote a postcard for our English correspondents. For my correspondents I cut the entrance of a Parisian subway. And to finish we all took a photo to show them our postcards. These two days were absolutely wonderful even if we worked hard. I hope the results will be excellent. Peter and Shona were very nice and great. These two days were wonderful, extraordinary and unforgettable.
Ophélie.

I am delighted about the final board. I think the two days were very organized.
At the beginning, we introduced each other. Then we listened to the instructions. This was very interesting and we started the board. We had to choose a photocopy which represented a Parisian element. We had to cut with a paper knife. There were safety rules because a paper knife is dangerous. This part of the work was very difficult because we had to be very meticulous, patient and so careful because you need to be very precise. Afterwards we gave our cuttings to Pete and he scanned them to put them together thanks to the software photoshop. The second day in the morning, we chose another photocopy and we did the same operation several times. In the afternoon, we chose the size and the scale of the elements. We chose the colour of the background. This was a difficult decision because no one agreed but after one hour everybody agreed and everybody liked the colour. At the end, we wrote a letter to our correspondents. And the adults took a photo of the group. I think the two days were very great because Peter and Shona were warm, endearing and gifted. The final work is unbelievable and I am proud of the production because we worked very hard and at the end the result was extraordinary.
Unai.

We worked two days with Shona and Peter. I had a great time with them, my teachers and my friends.
I listened to the safety rules to be able to cut with a paper knife. We had to be precise, clean and organized. They showed us a slide show of the festival. There were many people there from the whole world. Then we cut the first letter of our first name with a knife. I had difficulties in cutting but I got better. We finished at 4.30. I cut a picture which represented Paris. Peter scanned the cuttings. The second day we went on cutting, chose the colours and wrote a letter to our correspondent. We took a photograph of the group. We had to work hard and had a great time. I was very delighted.
Romane.

We had a great time. We had to choose a pattern. We traced photocopies. Then we took a paper knife to cut. We had fun. We followed the work instructions precisely and the safety rules too. We watched a slide show about last year’s project. We managed to put together all our drawings in one page. We had to be patient and attentive. Shona and Peter were very nice and gifted. We worked hard but at the end, we were proud of the result. We had a fantastic time.
Irman.

I greatly appreciated the two days. Everything was super well organized. We were all in a good mood and I loved the talented Shona and Peter. Indeed, I liked almost everything but I loved two things most: choosing the colours and making the card for our English friends but I didn’t like cutting and drawing on tracing paper because it was very hard. Besides I do not like the pictures. But I’m really satisfied with our work. It was really great and I thanked everyone.
Faizai.

We spent two days with two artists Peter and Shona: they were nice. They explained the organisation of the two days. We started the work with training. We had to use tracing paper to transfer the first letter of our first name on a paper because we had to do it for the project. Then we cut it. Mrs Létant repeated the safety rules. And in the afternoon we started the project with Shona, Peter, Mrs Létant and Mrs Daugé.
Charlène.

The project took place in the art classroom. The two artists were here when we arrived.
At the beginning we watched a slide show about this project. They explained what we were going to do and answered our questions. Then we worked on our board. We practised tracing and cutting our initials. After our training we chose a picture about Paris. I traced my photography; I turned my tracing paper to draw my drawing on the green paper. I cut this drawing with my knife. I finished the first cutting. I chose another picture with many details. I needed a lot of hours to finish my work and I sometimes needed Shona’s help.
When our cutting was finished Peter scanned our work on photoshop and organized. We chose the colours. We voted for the colours of the background. We agreed our work would have the same colour to give the illusion that only one paper had been cut.
Everybody said that the project was very beautiful. Everybody was proud. Shona and Peter were very patient and cool with us. But I have not always been able to find my words in English.
Annabelle.

During two days we were all cool. On Monday morning Peter and Shona, two English artists came in our classroom to talk to us about our project and the festival. After the break, we started the serious things. At the beginning, we took the first letter of our first name. I took the M: a very difficult letter. I didn’t finish my letter so Peter gave me a private lesson to show me how to cut it. It helped me very much. It was great!
Then, we traced from a picture and we had to be very careful to draw inside the lines. Cutting neatly was very difficult. But when we saw our work, we were happy and surprised. I think Peter and Shona are talented. It is a pity that it was only for two days.
Moussa.

At the beginning, the artists showed us a slide show about the London festival. Then Mrs Daugé explained us the safety rules to use the knives. We had pictures from Paris. We took tracing paper and a pencil. Then we transferred the drawing on a coloured paper. We cut the drawing with a paper knife. We did that during two days. I’m so happy because I worked well on Monday. The two artists were nice. They were English. We all worked in a good atmosphere. We laughed together. Everybody was satisfied with their work. I had a great time. Peter was warm and Fiona was thoughtful.
M’Djassiri.

During these two days, we did our project. There was Pete and Shona who worked with us. We traced pictures. We drew and then cut them. Pete and Shona were very nice, cool, patient and very funny. Then with a software, we put the scanned pictures together. We used paper, knives, tracing paper and pencils. Léonard.

Monday, Peter and Shona came at 9 to see us. They showed pictures about the Thames festival. We could see many people coming from different countries gathered along the River Thames to see other students' boards. Then they explained what we were going to do: tracing patterns from pictures about bridges' details, transfering them on coloured papers and cutting them with a paper knife.
When I heard it, I thought it was great even if I am so bad at cutting. Time to practise arrived. We had to use the technique we had decided with our initials. We took a break after talking about what we did. Real work was harder because the pictures were more detailed and that's what I hated. Be careful because there are safety rules! 1) Put your hand at the top opposite your cutting knife 2) just use the first blade of your paper knife. We could also turn our paper to facilitate our cutting.
I felt at ease because I was starting to understand how to do it. We kept cutting until tuesday afternoon.Plans were made just before breaktime. We were going to choose the colours, and write a postcard to our partners that Peter and Shona would give to them the next Monday. Choosing the colours was not very easy because each of us had different tastes. We finally decided we would go on with our card and Peter would make us some suggestions. Then We voted for beige and dark purple.
We wrote a french text which was corrected by Mrs Létant or Mrs Daugé. Then we glued the pattern of our choice at his back. I loved choosing Mona Lisa even if it finally looked a little funny! We took a picture of the group with our cards (even if I didn't have mine). We left at 4.35 pm but I hadn't finished my card so I stayed until 5.
Kevin.

BRIDGES OVER THE RIVER SEINE.

Here are some Haikus we wrote. Our teacher gave us a sheet with the vocabulary we needed. You can have a look at it to write your haikus.

Banks of the River
Reflected on the water
Projects dark shadows

The bridges of Paris
Flickering on the water
Twinkle in the sky

Iron-made bridges
Show Faint glimmer of daylight
Wakening up dawn

Two Little islands
Lots of silvery puddles
Water edges swirl

Streaks of pale light
Overflow the River banks
Seething, thundering

By cloudy weather
Resting under high bridges
Ripplings of the River

Steely-blue shadow
Half a man or half a dream
On the clear waters

The veils of the boat
Float in the breeze before
Mooring in the port

There are shafts of lights
With iridescent colours,
The glare of the sky.

Brilliant water’s edge
Daylight’s dazzling reflection
Runs into the sea.

Bridges are hyphens
Bridges are travel agents
Bridges are life.

The river’s glowing
On the shore, brillant sunset
Goes out behind it.

The moonlight twinkles
Glimmer of daylight fades
The water edges gleam.

The moonlight glitters,
The glare of the sky went out,
Daybreak is coming.

Moonlight, dull colors,
Beautiful glare of the sky,
The bridges are sad.

The water is pure.
Flowing calmly in the Seine,
It is the master.

Shadows of bridges
Appear with the brilliant moon.
Bridges never die.

A curious fish
Spouts out of the calm River
To see Notre-Dame.

A walking man
On the Parisian banks
Dived into the sky.

They are grey and old
stand, support and help us all
Parisian bridges!

The brilliant water
swirls quickly along the banks
blue water twinkles.

At sunrise puddles
Water runs into the sea
Puddles become sea.

Big floods everywhere
Water overflows the banks
O Land! Where are you ?

Streaks of light brilliant,
The glare of the sky glowing,
The sunrise spouts out.

Blatant waves eddy,
Strands swirl in the water’s edge,
The river thunders.

The pale light dances
On the flow of the river
The moonlight is soft.

Glimmer of daylight
Crowds walk across the bridges
Run over it too.

Dazzling reflections
Of the falls' ink-shadowed sheen
Streaks of light cascade.

Bright light is glowing
Iridescent colours flood
Waves swirl shafts of light.

The seine, its bridges
Sink under my opened eyes
Eternal River.

Upstream and downstream
From the left bank to the right
The river always.

An eternal life
Under the bridges, the Seine
Faint colours and sounds.

A magic river
Flowing udner Paris' bridges
Is named the Seine

On the river Seine
the stone is the bridge
You may have a look

Pleasure is in
The city which never sleeps
It is in Paris
